About

Who writes this, and how it's put together

ActNowASD is a small editorial team, not a medical practice or a diagnostic service. Here is exactly what that means for the pages you read here.

The pages are written by Josh Kay, a parent, not a clinician.

What ActNowASD is

ActNowASD is a plain-language reference site for parents and carers of autistic children, aged 0 and up. We write about the questions that come up in the first year after a diagnosis and beyond — sleep, food, distressed behaviour, school plans, safety, and medical topics like genetic testing — and we try to write them the way we'd want a well-informed friend to explain them: directly, without jargon, and without padding a page out to look authoritative.

How pages are sourced and reviewed

Every health or medical-adjacent page names its sources — clinical guidelines, published research, or government data — in a "Where this comes from" section, and carries a reviewed date so you can judge how current it is. We are not a hospital, a clinic, or a credentialed medical practice, and nothing on this site replaces a conversation with your child's own doctor, therapist, or a certified genetic counsellor. Where a page discusses a decision with real medical weight — like whether to pursue genetic testing — we say so plainly and point you toward the professionals who can actually advise you.

We are working toward adding named clinical review to more of our medical content over time. Until a page explicitly credits an individual reviewer, treat its "reviewed" date as an editorial currency check against our cited sources, not a clinical sign-off.

How the state and city directories work

A resource's description is paraphrased from its own website and dated. Ratings, where shown, come only from moderated parent reviews — never from the provider itself. Providers cannot pay to be listed, ranked, or edited, and nothing in a directory listing is a recommendation from ActNowASD. Programs, contact details, and eligibility rules change; always confirm directly with the agency or provider before relying on anything listed here.

How the connection forms work

A few pages — including the genetic testing article and the state and city directories — include an optional form to connect you with a genetics or testing partner, or with a support organization. Submitting one of these forms means an outside partner (not ActNowASD) may contact you by email about the topic of that form. We do not sell contact lists, and no specific provider is chosen for you by submitting — it registers interest, not a referral. Full details, including exactly what data is collected and how to withdraw consent, are on the privacy page.
